Big news again, with the announcement of the death of Osama bin Laden. The flag-waving and celebrations seen in US streets has reminded many people of the scenes in our countries when the September 11 attacks occurred. Many have wondered whether this is an appropriate response to the death of another human, even if it was the most wanted man on earth.
Many people are saying many things about this event (including quoting Martin Luther King jr with words that are not quite his). Here are some samples:
"I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." Martin Luther King, Jr
"I have never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure" Mark Twain
“Canada receives the news of the death of Osama bin Laden with sober satisfaction. Sadly, others will take his place.” Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper
“The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done.” Former US President George W Bush
“I congratulate the president, the National Security team and the members of our armed forces on bringing Osama Bin Laden to justice after more than a decade of murderous al-Qaeda attacks.” Former US President Bill Clinton
Meanwhile, Albert Mohler (a very wise and bold Christian man in the US) writes about the death of a human and true justice here. Worth a read, as is most of his stuff.
