Last night Nathan, Sandy, Kieron, Pete and Matt sat in the audience of the ABC's popular discussion show QandA. Thanks Peter Mc for the invite! It was a great night. Some highlights:
We submitted many questions between us, but it was one of Pete's that was 'shortlisted'. He was ready to go with his, but unfortunately wasn't one of the "Chosen Ones". Maybe next week at Bible Study we'll do our own QandA ...?
Chatting with some of the panellists after the show I felt that they represented themselves well. That is, what you see on the show is what goes on – there’s no editing, fudging, etc and they are the real people (although the make up artists has a flurry of activity in the 15 seconds before going to air).
As we were waiting to enter the studio we chatted about how those in the media hold a certain power to influence our society. The people that chose the questions that will be asked, the panellists that will appear, even who will sit in the audience (you have to register) - these people determine the "flavour" of the show. They have their own worldviews, beliefs, and political persuasions. But they are also humans just like us, doing their jobs, making a living. People in positions of power, authority and influence - do they know the impact they have on people, and are the masses who watch the media know how much they are influenced by these people?
