The Blind Side

Movie Review

A feel good, heart-stirring tale, based on true events, about reaching out across society’s divisions.

Outline

Michael Oher is a big, black teenager, an outcast at school, effectively homeless, and has little prospects for his future. But when a white middle-class woman invites him to stay in her home with her husband and kids, his life seems to have turned for the better. Discovering a gift for football is a dream come true for him, especially when he gets the attention of professional football scouts. But is it that simple?

Pros & Cons
This movie will get you thinking. The movie centres around the actions of Sandra Bullock’s character. We see what she does, but are challenged to consider her motivations. As only God can truly know one’s heart, it is an interesting investigation into whether her actions are simply altruistically motivated, or is there something else behind the winning smile. You will also be challenged to consider what it means to help someone. What we think is helpful, might not be in their best interests. It reminds me of how God has met my deepest need in what Jesus has done for me, even though if I had the opportunity I probably would have asked for a thousand different things first. A word of warning. If you have a weak stomach when it comes to watching bones go where they are not supposed to, keep your eyes closed at the very beginning while the woman counts “One Mississippi, two Mississippi, ...” When the music starts it’s safe to watch.
Recommendation

A great story. Thought provoking and entertaining.
