Memoirs of an Ordinary Pastor

Book Review

DA Carson is well-known amongst evangelical Christians through his speaking and writing as a clear and insightful Bible teacher. His father, Tom, served the church too, but in a far different - and ordinary - way. Tom served as a pastor in the Baptist church in French-speaking Quebec, Canada, during a period of change and challenge. This book shows the faithfulness and determination of 'an ordinary pastor.'

Outline

Most Christian pastors are - from the outside - ordinary. That is, they do not speak to thousands, publish volumes or grow mega churches. Ordinary pastors go about the work of leading Christ's church with little fanfare or recognition, yet their work is vital and bears fruit in ways they do not always see.

Tom Carson was one such pastor. He served as a pastor of a few Baptist churches in Quebec, a French-speaking province of Canada. At the time Quebec moved from a highly Catholic region to predominately secular. In the middle of this change Tom preached and lived biblical truth despite the cost and difficulties for him and his family.

This is a simple, frank account gathered from a variety of sources, including Don and his siblings' recollections, and from Tom's own journals. Tom is not portrayed as the perfect man in any of his roles - pastor, husband, father. But what he is shown to be was a faithful and determined minister of the Word.

Pros & Cons
Recommendation

Sometimes I dream of earthly glory, but a book like this brings me back to heaven. It's too simple to say I want to be like Tom; too often I desire the shortcuts, the easy road, the recognition now. No, what I want is to have the heart that wants to serve like Tom - faithful and determined.
